The Hematology/Oncology department at Harvard Vanguard is again celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day at our Kenmore practice.  Please join us on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 2:30 to 4:30pm in the Atrium lobby at Kenmore to celebrate everyone who has had cancer, has cancer now, or has been touched by cancer in a loved one. There will be opportunities to learn more about how to get and stay healthy and how to cope with having cancer as a part of one’s life. Staff from many of Harvard Vanguard’s departments will be sharing information about mammography, nutrition, cancer genetics, oncology and more. There will also be representatives from many local and national organizations which support cancer survivors, including the American Cancer Society, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, LIVESTRONG, Facing Cancer Together, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there are approximately 11.4 million people in the United States who are cancer survivors. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship broadly defines “survivor” as any person who has been diagnosed with cancer. This includes people who have completed their therapy as well as those who are receiving ongoing treatment or those who have metastatic disease. For people who have completed their treatment, many find that the end of treatment is not the end of the cancer experience. All survivors can face issues such as fear of recurrence, lingering medication side effects, job and financial issues, depression and anxiety, and uncertainty about the future.

Come by and help us Celebrate Survivorship!
