Survivorship the JourneyThe Department of Hematology and Oncology of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Kenmore and the Atrius Health Foundation are pleased to offer a three-part series called Survivorship … The Journey.

These classes were created for those currently in cancer treatment, those soon to complete treatment or those who have completed their treatment. This interactive educational series will explore mind-body techniques for coping, as well as guidelines for exercise and nutrition for cancer survivors.

Classes will be led by experts in the field, and topics will include:

Coping Well (Wednesday, May 20) – Instructor: Claire Willis, LICSW

Claire is a body/mind licensed clinical social worker with more than 25 years’ experience in individual and group work and 18 years’ experience teaching yoga and meditation.

Learn a variety of techniques that will help you use the power of your thoughts and feelings to positively influence your physical health, and feel more balanced and relaxed in your daily life. Techniques include relaxation response, breathing breaks, progressive relaxation, mindfulness meditation, gentle stretching, journaling, gratitude journals and thought patterns. You will be encouraged to experiment with all of these methods to find what works best for you.

Moving Well (Wednesday, May 27) – Instructor: Marlene DeCoste, MA CSCS, ACSM-RCEP, ACSM EP-C

Marlene is an exercise physiologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Tanger Center.

Exercise can be helpful in many ways during cancer treatment and recovery. Join us and learn about the current exercise guidelines for survivors, the types of exercise you should be doing and how to incorporate movement into your daily life.

Eating Well (Wednesday, June 3) – Instructor: Melissa Gilman, MPH, RD, LDN

Melissa is a registered dietitian at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates who works with patients in the oncology department.

Nutrition is an important part of your cancer treatment and recovery. Join us to review the recommendations for a healthy lifestyle as a cancer survivor. We will discuss how eating a healthy diet, along with regular physical activity, can help you feel better, stay strong and promote overall health.

 

This cancer survivor series is funded by donations to Harvard Vanguard’s Hematology and Oncology department through the Atrius Health Foundation and is free of charge to participants. All classes will be held at the Kenmore practice from noon until 2 pm. Lunch will be served at each class followed by the program.
